When diagnosed with a serious illness, it’s normal to have lots of questions about what lies ahead. Doctors are great resources for information and can discuss your condition in detail. Here are some questions to consider asking to help ensure you understand your illness:
- What does this mean?
- How serious is my illness?
- What are my options?
- When do I have to decide?
- What if I have more questions? Who can I contact?
- When can I schedule an advance care planning meeting?
Remember to take your time, write notes and ask questions until you feel comfortable with what you’ve been told. Don’t hesitate to ask for brochures and other resources about your condition and care options.
In addition to talking with your doctor, take time to learn more and determine what is best for you. To help with this, download our Serious Illness tri-fold brochure or consider asking for a palliative care consultation, which is focused on helping you through a serious illness.
