Vice President, Technology
As Vice President of Technology, Mark is the co-inventor of the LifeCode Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engine with two patents on NLP technology for computer-assisted coding (CAC). The LifeCode NLP Engine powers the Optum CAC solution, automating the assignment of ICD-9, ICD-10, current procedural terminology (CPT) and health care common procedure coding system (HCPCS) codes for hospitals and physicians. Mark Morsch brings to Optum more than a decade of medical technology, engineering and coding experience.
Mark is an author and speaker on the effective use of NLP and CAC in the healthcare industry. He serves on the executive committee of the Health Story Project and was co-chair of the AHIMA-sponsored CAC Summit in 2011 and 2012.
Prior to joining OptumInsight, Mark worked for A-Life Medical as the Vice President of Technology. He led a team of computer scientists, linguists and coding experts in the continuing advancement of A-Life Medical’s CAC technology. Mark holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.
Carrie Cooper is an Associate Director with 15 years of experience as a Clinical Analyst in the Health Care Insurance Industry. Dr. Cooper is an expert in health care operations/business design and is well-versed in health plan payer processes – including clinical operations, facility reimbursement policy and financial/utilization reporting. Her current focus is ICD-10, providing senior leadership and oversight to clients regarding ICD-10 migration and remediation. She has successfully provided overview training on ICD-10 and ICD-10 remediation planning to many clients and internal consulting staff. In addition to her current consulting role, Dr. Cooper is actively involved with HIMSS and the development of their ICD-10 playbook. She has attended various sessions to help support and develop ICD-10 remediation support material.
Prior to focusing on ICD-10, Dr. Cooper was a lead analyst in the development of system wide deployment of Hospital Performance Assessment application to UHC Clinical Staff. This application focused on analyzing hospital utilization and provided reporting to assist Medical Directors in reviewing and clinical metrics and developing report card discussing points with providers.
Dr. Cooper received her received her Science Doctorate in Health Systems Management and her Master of Health Administration from Tulane University.
Vice President, National Solution Leader, ICD-10 and CDI
Shely is the Vice President and National Solution Leader for ICD-10 and Clinical Documentation Improvement in the provider market. With more than 15 years of experience in the health care industry, Shely is a thought leader on ICD-10 speaking at numerous national conferences. She is responsible for leading the ICD-10 and CDI solution offerings for OptumInsight Provider Consulting including business readiness, implementation, ICD-10 education and training, CDI programs, resource management, and bringing new business development to the marketplace.
Prior to her current role, Shely was Director of the Revenue Cycle, providing patient access and revenue cycle services. Shely has worked at provider organizations, having served as a billing operations manager at a large multi-specialty clinic in the Midwest. She came to OptumInsight in November 2008 after being an engagement manager at Global Works Systems, Inc., now an OptumInsight company. Shely’s background includes all facets of the revenue cycle offering a unique perspective across provider organizations with an operational and systematic approach to solutions.
